**The week in one line:** Big owners are cutting structure (Pon, Bosch), reported profits are being flattered by one-time IEEPA tariff refunds (Thule, Deckers), and the Vail Resorts proxy fight moved from performance to the independence of the nominees.

## The week's most important stories

### 1\. Pon consolidates: Cannondale leaves Connecticut, Juliana folds into Santa Cruz

Pon will close Cannondale's Wilton, CT headquarters by mid-2027, move its global HQ to Woudenberg, Netherlands, and run North American sales and service out of Santa Cruz, CA alongside Santa Cruz and Cervélo. A WARN notice lists 143 workers, with layoffs from Dec. 21, 2026 through 2027. ([Bicycle Retailer](https://bicycleretailer.com/industry-news/2026/10/21/cannondale-closing-connecticut-headquarters-consolidating-other-pon-brands), [Escape Collective](https://escapecollective.com/cannondale-will-close-its-us-headquarters/)) Reps will now sell all three brands together, the multi-brand model Pon already runs in the UK. ([Cannondale statement](https://www.bicycleretailer.com/sites/default/files/downloads/article/us_media_statement_brain.pdf)) A day later, Juliana ended 13 years as Santa Cruz's women's sister brand and was folded into Santa Cruz. ([Bikerumor](https://bikerumor.com/juliana-bicycles-announces-the-end-of-its-13-year-run-as-santa-cruzs-sister-brand/))

**Why it matters:** The world's largest bike group is choosing shared back offices and multi-brand reps over standalone brand identities. That puts pressure on the dealer relationship and on how much "brand" a mid-tier bike label can afford.

**Watch next:** Whether Pon's other U.S. brands or rivals (Accell, Giant/Liv) follow with similar consolidation, and how dealers respond to multi-brand reps.

### 2\. Tariff refunds are flattering outdoor earnings

Thule's Q3 sales rose 3% to SEK 2,603M, but organic growth was only 1.2%, with North America down 0.8% and Rest of World down 12.4%. Operating income of SEK 521M included SEK 52M of tariff refunds; excluding them, profit was roughly flat. ([Thule](https://mfn.se/all/a/thule-group/thule-interim-report-third-quarter-2026-july-september), [Investing.com](https://www.investing.com/news/earnings/thule-q3-operating-profit-rises-15-but-organic-sales-growth-slows-to-12-4964703)) Deckers posted record Q2 revenue of $1.48B but missed the $1.51B consensus, cut full-year sales guidance to $5.70–5.73B, and raised EPS guidance to $7.80–7.95, including about $0.52 of IEEPA tariff refunds. ([Deckers](https://ir.deckers.com/news-events/press-releases/detail/666/deckers-brands-reports-second-quarter-fiscal-year-2027-financial-results), [Investopedia](https://www.investopedia.com/market-update-deckers-outdoor-shares-sink-as-ugg-hoka-parent-trims-full-year-sales-forecast-12189514))

**Why it matters:** Refunds are a one-time boost. Strip them out and the underlying picture is slow organic growth and heavier promotion, especially in North America.

**Watch next:** How VF, Garmin, Columbia and Fox Factory treat tariff refunds in the next two weeks, and whether they separate them from core results.

### 3\. Vail Resorts' proxy fight turns to nominee independence

Vail filed its own preliminary proxy on Oct. 19, backing its nine incumbent directors and asking holders to reject Oasis Management's four nominees (Robert Chapek, M. Ashton Hudson, Bryce Roberts and Picabo Street). The company disclosed a consulting deal paying Chapek $100,000 a month through the annual meeting and said Matthew Prince, who wants to buy Park City Mountain, introduced Roberts and Street to Oasis. These are the company's claims in a contested solicitation. ([Vail Tribune](https://vailtribune.com/business/vail-resorts-answers-oasis-proxy-filing/), [Vail Daily](https://www.vaildaily.com/news/vail-resorts-accuses-oasis-management-of-conflict-by-working-with-prince-in-board-bid/)) Prince said he sent Oasis about a dozen names and had no say in its picks. ([KPCW](https://www.kpcw.org/ski-resorts/2026-10-20/vail-says-park-city-billionaire-is-influencing-oasis-board-bid)) Oasis and its group hold about 9.6%, while Baron Capital (18.3%) and Capital Research (11.4%) hold more. ([Vail Tribune](https://vailtribune.com/business/vail-resorts-answers-oasis-proxy-filing/), [Tahoe Daily Tribune](https://www.tahoedailytribune.com/news/analysis-taylor-proxy-fight-for-control-of-vail-resorts-board-boils-down-to-institutional-investors/))

**Why it matters:** Oasis's own filing notes that pass unit sales through Sept. 18 were down about 12% year over year. The contest is a referendum on Vail's pass-led model going into the season. ([Oasis PREC14A](https://investors.vailresorts.com/static-files/78aba671-61dd-49b6-9f2b-d2d2f68d0306))

**Watch next:** Definitive proxies, proxy-advisor (ISS, Glass Lewis) recommendations, the meeting date (usually early December), and where Baron and Capital Research land.

### 4\. Bosch carves out Mobility, which includes eBike Systems

Bosch will move its German Mobility business, including its bicycle activities, into a separate wholly owned subsidiary starting Aug. 1, 2027, with about 62,500 German employees transferring. CEO Christian Fischer cited growing pressure from Asian competitors. ([Bike Europe](https://www.bike-eu.com/53439/bosch-reorganises-corporate-structure-and-creates-mobility-subsidiary), [Bicycle Retailer](https://www.bicycleretailer.com/announcements/2026/10/23/bosch-reorganizing-its-corporate-structure)) The same week, Bosch launched a smaller, lighter Active Line Plus motor, with Trek first to spec it in North America. ([Endurance Sportswire](https://www.endurancesportswire.com/bosch-ebike-systems-introduce-new-generation-of-active-line-plus/))

**Why it matters:** A standalone structure makes it easier to partner, sell or spin pieces later. No sale of eBike Systems has been announced.

### 5\. Europe's e-bike supply chain under legal and financial strain

An Oct. 7 EU General Court ruling (case T-529/25) lets customs treat separately shipped e-bike parts as complete e-bikes, potentially exposing European assemblers to China anti-dumping duties of up to 70.1%. ([Bike Europe](https://www.bike-eu.com/53424/eu-court-ruling-threatens-future-of-european-e-bike-assembly), [Deloitte](https://www.deloitte.com/be/en/services/tax/blogs/split-consignments-may-constitute-one-complete-article-general-court-clarifies-gir-2-a.html)) Bids for Accell's Cycles Lapierre, in receivership since Aug. 25 with €137M of declared liabilities, are due Oct. 28. ([Les Echos listing](http://reprise-entreprise.lesechos.fr/annonce/autre_cycles-lapierre_autres-autres-activites-et-services__nc_11669), [Dijon court ruling](https://justice.pappers.fr/decision/fe2142e034451ef15e2b0723aa97064de2347f9c)) France Inter counts about 200 French bike companies in insolvency proceedings over the past year, the most since 2008. ([France Inter](https://www.radiofrance.fr/franceinter/podcasts/le-reportage-d-on-n-arrete-pas-l-eco/le-reportage-d-on-n-arrete-pas-l-eco-du-samedi-24-octobre-2026-8852480))

**Watch next:** Who bids for Lapierre, and whether assemblers appeal or seek guidance on the split-consignment ruling.

## Themes and trends

- **Consolidation over brand count.** Pon (Cannondale, Juliana), Bosch (Mobility carve-out) and the Lapierre receivership all point to the same thing: owners are shrinking cost bases and brand portfolios rather than waiting for demand.
- **Tariff refunds mask soft top lines.** Thule and Deckers both reported profit help from refunds while organic sales slowed, especially in North America.
- **The premium consumer is waiting for deals.** Deckers cited heavier U.S. footwear promotion and shoppers waiting for discounts, Moncler was flat in Europe, and an NRF survey found 64% of shoppers plan to wait until Thanksgiving weekend for most holiday buying. ([Livemint/Reuters](https://www.livemint.com/companies/deckers-results-show-aggressive-discounts-from-rivals-are-hitting-premium-brands-11792708709898.html), [SGB Media](https://sgbonline.com/update/outdoor/))
- **Chinese capital keeps buying Western outdoor brands.** ATG's Lowe Alpine deal and the Ding family's deeper presence on Amer Sports' board fit the pattern.
- **E-bike regulation is cutting both ways.** New Jersey's licensing law has closed about 36 shops through September and cut legal e-bike sales about 20%, and bill S4830 would roll it back for Class 1 and 2 bikes. ([Bicycle Retailer](https://www.bicycleretailer.com/industry-news/2026/10/20/nbda-calls-review-amendments-nj-law-putting-shops-out-business), [Electrek](https://electrek.co/2026/10/22/new-jersey-may-finally-reverse-its-draconian-e-bike-law-after-massive-backlash/)) China's domestic e-bike sales nearly stalled after 3C certificate suspensions. - **A slow start to the U.S. ski season.** The Alps got their first big snow Oct. 22, but Colorado's opening race stalled on warm weather, with Keystone pushing its first ticket date to Oct. 31. ([Pick-a-Ski](https://www.pick-a-ski.com/en/articles/first-snow-alps-october-2026), [Summit Daily](https://www.summitdaily.com/news/colorado-ski-resorts-opening-warm-weather-has-not-helped/))
